|Coach talks about his FSU pledge|
Florida State wanted to see how John Franklin developed and played this fall at South Plantation. Coach Doug Gatewood sent the 'Noles his seven game senior highlight tape. FSU offered yesterday and Franklin committed today. Check out that film and what Gatewood said Jimbo Fisher is getting in Franklin.
Good things come to those who wait. That was the case with South Plantation quarterback John Franklin and FSU.
Franklin was hopeful that Florida State would give him a scholarship offer. That happened yesterday morning. Earlier today he committed to Jimbo Fisher and the Seminoles.
"This is the one he was really hoping for," said Doug Gatewood, South Plantation's coach. "I took John and Alex[Collins] to summer camps there before their junior and senior seasons. FSU is the place he has always loved. It's where he wanted to be."
Patience has paid off for the 6-foot-1 and 175-pound Franklin. Up until yesterday he was looking strongly at offers from teams like Air Force, Bowling Green, Florida International, Navy, Temple and Western Kentucky. Most of those schools want him to play quarterback. Other schools feel he's a wide receiver or defensive back. For Franklin, it's simple, he wants the ball and a shot at playing quarterback in college.
"FSU has always said they would evaluate him at quarterback," Gatewood said. "I just sent out his seven game highlight tape [link is below] this year and I sent it to FSU. The past two weeks we have basically been without Alex because of his injury. So it's all been on his shoulders and he has carried us. I spoke with Eddie [Gran] and they are off this week. They had a big recruiting meeting and then offered him yesterday."
And it wasn't an offer just to help Florida State out with Franklin's teammate and good friend in Collins.
"No," Gatewood said. "They really want John."
Gatewood and his South Plantation staff also added a little more to the passing game this season, despite having five-star running back Alex Collins, who happens to be the No. 6 ranked recruit nationally at his position.
"Coming into this season our offense was mainly Alex," Gatewood said. "When we passed the ball it was all three-step stuff. Colleges couldn't get a good read on John. This season we added 5-step stuff and he has played really well. He can play the position."
FSU is getting a very good athlete regardless of what position he plays. If things don't work out as the Seminoles future signal caller, he has the size, speed and athletic ability to play wide receiver or somewhere in the FSU secondary.
"First and foremost they are getting a great kid," Gatewood said. "He's a two year captain. He carries a 4.0 GPA and has a 28 ACT. John comes from a wonderful two-parent family.
"And he can play quarterback. He can play receiver. He can play defensive back. John ran 21.4 [electronic] 200 meters and 10.8 100 meters. Eddie Gran timed him a 4.38 [forty] at their camp. I didn't time him in any of those events. That's all him."
