Bowling Green, Ky. - Six former WKU football players looked to keep their football dreams alive on Wednesday, working out in front of numerous professional scouts at WKU’s annual Pro Day at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium.

Former Hilltoppers Jamarcus Allen, Jack Doyle, Kawaun Jakes, Rammell Lewis, Adam Smith and Ryan Wallace all participated in a series of drills and workouts after months of training and preparation.

“I think today went well,” former Hilltopper offensive lineman Adam Smith said. “I think everyone did well. Two or three months of training for these drills really helps you out.”

Smith, along with defensive linemen Rammell Lewis and Jamarcus Allen took part in various footwork drills for linemen in front of the scouts. Allen, who starred on the defensive front for WKU, also spent some time catching passes out of the backfield, as he announced that he will be working out as a fullback as well. Allen compiled 107 tackles, 19 of which went for negative yardage, in his 41 career contests as a defensive lineman at WKU.

“It was good coming out here and coming one step closer to your dream in front of all of these scouts and trying to put on the best performance you can,” Allen said. “Hopefully you get a call back. This is something that I will never forget.”

Former Hilltopper tight end Jack Doyle participated in his second Pro Day on Wednesday, after having another workout in his hometown of Indianapolis, Ind., in February.

“I was really nervous [for the Indianapolis Pro Day], so this one I took a little bit of a different approach,” Doyle said. “I went out there today and treated it kind of like a game day. I did the best I could, but I’m glad it’s over and now it’s on to the next step.”

Jack Doyle wrapped up his career at WKU as one of the most decorated tight ends to ever don the Red and White. Doyle finished his career second on WKU’s all-time receptions list with 162 receptions, including a career-high 53 grabs in 2012.

Also working out on the offensive side on Wednesday was quarterback Kawaun Jakes and tight end Ryan Wallace. Jakes was a four-year starting quarterback at WKU, becoming just the fourth player in program history to stay under center for four seasons. Jakes tossed a program record 51 touchdowns, including a single-season record 22 during his senior campaign. Wallace worked out mainly as a longsnapper on Wednesday, after serving as the WKU longsnapper during his time on the Hill.

Pro Day has been very valuable for former Hilltoppers over the years, as former WKU running back Bobby Rainey and former WKU defensive back Derrius Brooks were each signed as NFL free agents last season, with Rainey winning a Super Bowl title with the Baltimore Ravens.

WKU last had a player selected in the NFL Draft in 2003, as Jeremi Johnson was selected in the fourth round by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2003. The Hilltoppers last saw multiple players taken in the same draft in 2002 when Joseph Jefferson (3rd round, Indianapolis) and Mel Mitchell (5th round, New Orleans) were selected.

The 2013 NFL Draft is set to begin on Thursday, April 25 and run through Saturday, April 27.
