Bowling Green, Ky. — WKU assistant men’s basketball coach Phil Cunningham has been named the new head coach at Troy University after spending the 2012-13 season on the Hilltopper bench under head coach Ray Harper.
"I am very happy for Phil to have the opportunity to become a head coach," Harper said. "He did a great job on our staff this season, and having known him for many years I know that he will do a great job at Troy. Being a head coach is something that almost every assistant coach dreams about, and I am pleased that Phil is getting the chance."
WKU finished the 2012-13 season last week in the NCAA Tournament, dropping a hard-fought game against top-seeded Kansas, 64-57. The Hilltoppers ended the season winning seven of their final nine games of the year, including winning four games in four days to win the Sun Belt Conference Tournament for the second-straight season and advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in the last six seasons.
After trips to the 2012 and 2013 NCAA Tournaments, WKU will return 79.5 percent of its scoring and 85.3 percent of its rebounding in 2013-14.
