I had the privilege of watching WKU conduct their weight lifting session on Friday and it was awesome! Coach Jim Nowell and his staff ensured the atmosphere in the weight room was electric and extremely intense. The players loved it! Coaches were constantly pushing players to work hard, gut it out, and push themselves to the limit. Seniors are expected to be in front of the pack and leading by example, Dusty Bear (#53, OLB), Greg Ryan (#52, OG), Jamar Jones (#85, WR), and Curtis Hamilton (#15, WR), did exactly that!
Several other players caught my eye with strong performances. Redshirt JR Chris “BIG Sash” McConnell (#67, OG), Redshirt Soph Cody Hughes, (#70, OG), JR Robert Dark (#55, DE) and Redshirt Frosh Daruis Baughman (#36, TE) were impressive as well.
After lifting weights the players then executed 16 (timed) one hundred yard sprints. Coach Nowell was extremely pleased with the team after the day's workout. He has been very pleased with the effort and the attitudes of the players all summer.
Later in the evening, I found myself thinking about the workout that I had witnessed earlier. The pride the team had shown, the class in which they conducted their workouts, the character the coaches and players displayed in their work ethic, left me very impressed. Then I remembered a statement I had read long ago made by legendary coach Paul “Bear” Bryant, “Show class, have pride and display character, if you do winning will take care of itself.” If pride, class, and character are the main ingredients for a winning program then WKU football has a bright future indeed!
Below are video clips of Friday’s workout for your viewing pleasure.
WARNING: After watching these clips your off-season, lack of any football to watch, anxiety will increase and you will be even hungrier for some Hilltopper football action!
